History Of The Ragdolls

The Ragdoll breed of cats has a fascinating history that began in the 1960s with a woman named Ann Baker in Riverside, California, USA. The story of the Ragdoll kittens is one of accidental discovery and careful breeding to create a unique and beloved cat breed.

Here’s a brief history of Ragdoll kittens:

Ann Baker’s Discovery: The Ragdoll breed’s origin is often attributed to a white Persian/Angora cat named Josephine, owned by Ann Baker. In the early 1960s, Josephine was hit by a car and survived with a calm and placid temperament. Ann Baker, a breeder herself, noticed this and started breeding Josephine with other cats to understand and replicate her temperament and looks.

Foundation Cats: Ann Baker bred Josephine with various cats, including Burmese, Birman, and Persian breeds, to create a new breed with the desired traits. The offspring of these breedings exhibited the Ragdoll’s characteristic traits: large size, semi-long fur, striking blue eyes, and a gentle, affectionate personality.

The “Ragdoll” Name: The name “Ragdoll” reportedly originated from the tendency of these cats to go limp and relaxed when held, just like a ragdoll. Their docile nature and love for being cradled in a person’s arms contributed to this name.

Formal Recognition: The Ragdoll breed was officially recognized by cat associations in the 1960s and 1970s. Ann Baker founded her own registry, the International Ragdoll Cat Association (IRCA), which later split into other breed associations.

Breed Development: Ragdoll breeders worked on refining and standardizing the breed’s characteristics, including its color patterns (colorpoint, mitted, and bi-color) and coat colors. Ragdolls come in a variety of colors, with the most common being colorpoint, similar to the Siamese cat.

Popularity and Spread: Ragdolls gained popularity in the United States and soon spread to other countries. They became known for their striking looks and sweet, gentle personalities, making them a favorite choice for families.

Today’s Ragdoll Cats: Today, Ragdoll cats are beloved worldwide for their beauty, temperament, and affectionate nature. They are sought after as ideal pets due to their friendly and easygoing personalities.

The history of Ragdoll kittens is a testament to the dedication of breeders who carefully developed and refined this unique breed, resulting in the wonderful cats that we know and love today.
